What changes at factory scale

Software for a glass factory rests on the same record as software for a workshop. What changes is not the record but the number of jobs open at once.

Moving from a workshop to a factory does not change the foundation of the software: order, cutting plan, production tracking, dispatch. What changes is scale and the two new problems scale brings. Those are what separate software for a glass factory from software for a glass workshop.

The first is the number of jobs open at the same time. Where a workshop has a few orders at the bench, a factory has dozens flowing at once. How many stacks can stay open at the bench is a physical limit; if the plan does not know that limit, a plan that looks producible jams on the floor. That is why stack count and job variety sit among the constraints of optimisation.

The second is that the same product can be in several places. In a workshop a sheet is wherever it is; in a factory the same product may be on three different racks. Without a location record, inventory turns into a list of guesses and nobody trusts that list. The count being correct is not enough, which one is where is needed too.

The third difference is that traceability becomes compulsory. In a workshop the question of where a piece is can be answered by asking; in a factory there is nobody to ask. Barcode scanning stops being a convenience here and becomes a basic requirement, because memory does not scale.

None of this requires a different record structure. That continuity is exactly what is meant by software for a glass business: the arrangement built at workshop scale is not thrown away when the work grows. New stations are added, new locations are defined, the record stays the same.

Separating permissions becomes compulsory in a factory. The person scanning at the bench does not need to see the customer account, and accounting does not need to change the cutting plan. When it is clear who can do what, finding out why a record changed is quick; in a large team that search otherwise takes half a day.

The trading side rests on the same foundation. Software for glass trading or for a glass dealer may not cut anything, but catalogue, price list, quotation and customer account all sit on the same record. The only difference is which screens are used; the structure underneath does not change.
